Founded in 1944 and known as Xinqiao Hospital since 1955, it is a military hospital open to civilian patients, with about 2,860 beds and 289 intensive-care beds. It has ten national key disciplines, including respiratory medicine, cardiology, cardiac surgery, orthopaedics, urology and neurosurgery.
Each year it performs more than 7,000 cardiac interventions, 3,500 heart operations, 2,200 minimally invasive spine operations and 3,000 cerebrovascular interventions; it has carried out more than 1,200 stem-cell and 3,900 kidney transplants. About a third of its inpatients come from outside Chongqing. It developed an orthopaedic surgical robot with its own intellectual property.
