Southwest Hospital grew out of the Central Hospital founded in Nanjing in 1929, which moved to Chongqing in 1941; it is now the first affiliated hospital of the Army Medical University (formerly the Third Military Medical University) and is open to civilian patients. It has about 2,900 beds and in 2016 handled 3.8 million outpatient visits and 96,000 operations.
It has ten national key disciplines — burns, hepatobiliary surgery, infectious diseases, urology, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, cardiology and respiratory medicine. Its burn institute is the top-ranked in China, and it is also in the national top 10 for pathology, plastic surgery and laboratory medicine.
