The hospital grew from the Margaret Williamson Hospital, founded in 1884 with funds from the American Margaret Williamson; its red-brick building gave it the popular name “Red House Hospital”. It now has two campuses, 820 beds and about 1.7 million outpatient visits a year.
Its departments cover general and oncological gynaecology, reproductive endocrinology, prenatal diagnosis and foetal medicine, maternal medicine, neonatology and breast disease, along with the Fudan sperm bank and the Shanghai fertility preservation centre. Gynaecology and obstetrics are both national key clinical specialties.
