The hospital was created in 1957 when part of the affiliated hospital of Shanghai First Medical College (now Fudan University) moved to Chongqing. It has about 3,200 beds and in 2017 handled 3.35 million outpatient visits and 110,000 operations, and it offers foreign-related medical services.
It has 17 national key clinical specialties and five leading discipline groups — neuroscience, oncology, lipid and glucose metabolism, ophthalmology and critical care — and leads a hospital group of more than 20 hospitals.
