The hospital traces its origins to a British military hospital built in Tianjin in 1861, later the Mackenzie Memorial Hospital. It is a National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, and oncology is a national key discipline; it has national key clinical specialties in thoracic surgery, nursing, oncology and pathology.
In 2017 it had 1.1 million outpatient visits and 28,000 operations. It is known for surgery for breast, lung, liver, stomach, colorectal and oesophageal cancer, bone and soft-tissue tumours and head and neck cancer, and is a sister hospital of MD Anderson and the Moffitt and Fox Chase cancer centres.
