The hospital grew out of the China Anti-Blindness Association founded in 1924 by a French professor at the Peiyang Medical School, and in 1949 became the North China Blindness Prevention Hospital — the first specialist eye hospital of new China.
Its 15 clinical services cover strabismus and paediatric ophthalmology, optometry and refractive surgery, cataract, orbital and oculoplastic surgery, vitreoretinal disease, cornea, glaucoma and integrative ophthalmology. It handles about a million patient visits and 30,000 operations a year and runs a mobile eye clinic for the community.
