Founded in 1957 by Deng Jiadong, one of the founders of Chinese haematology, the institute and hospital has about 1,270 open beds and up to 300,000 patient visits a year. It hosts the National Clinical Research Center for Blood Diseases and the State Key Laboratory of Experimental Haematology.
Its specialist centres cover red-cell disorders, leukaemia, thrombosis and haemostasis, stem-cell transplantation, lymphoma, MDS and MPN, childhood blood cancers and cell therapy. It performed China’s first autologous stem-cell transplant and publishes Blood Science, the country’s only English-language haematology journal.
