Fang Xianzhi founded the Tianjin Orthopaedic Hospital, China’s first, in 1944; in 1972 it became Tianjin Hospital and was then the largest orthopaedic hospital in Asia. Merged with Tianhe Hospital in 2012, it now has about 2,070 beds and specialises in orthopaedics, trauma, vascular surgery, geriatrics and rehabilitation.
Its Tianjin Institute of Integrated Traditional and Western Orthopaedics developed small-splint fixation and external fixation methods known internationally as “Chinese osteosynthesis”, which received a WHO award. It hosts the Tianjin trauma, joint surgery and orthopaedic rehabilitation centres.
