Opened in 1989 under the century-old Xiangya brand, the hospital has about 1,900 open beds and 2,800 staff. Transplant medicine — liver, kidney and islet-cell transplantation for diabetes — is its signature; the international guidelines on clinical xenotransplantation research, the “Changsha Communiqué”, were issued here in 2008.
It performed China’s first operation with a domestically made surgical robot, and its health-management centre was among China’s first national demonstration bases. Its general surgery, imaging, clinical pharmacy, gastroenterology and nursing are national key clinical specialty projects.
