Funded by the Hong Kong philanthropist Sir Run Run Shaw and managed for its first five years by Loma Linda University in California, SRRSH opened in 1994 with Western-style management that it still follows. It now has seven campuses, about 4,300 beds and 8,200 staff.
It was the first hospital in mainland China accredited by Joint Commission International, the first certified as a Magnet hospital, and the first Chinese member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. About 80% of its operations are minimally invasive; it created China’s first department of minimally invasive medicine and pioneered 5G ultra-remote robotic surgery. It is a preferred training site for overseas medical students and residents.
