Founded in 1947 as Zhejiang University’s first teaching hospital, the hospital now runs six campuses in Hangzhou with more than 5,000 beds and over 10,000 staff. It hosts the National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases and leads a national regional medical centre.
It is best known for organ transplantation — liver, pancreas, lung, kidney, small bowel and heart — with the broadest range of major-organ transplants in China, and for infectious disease, haematology, nephrology, urology and clinical pharmacy. It has 22 national key clinical specialties and won a National Science and Technology Progress Special Award, the only one ever given to the education and health sector.
