Founded in 1935, the centre has about 1,900 approved beds (more than 2,100 open) on its Xuhui and Minhang campuses. It is a teaching hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong, Fudan, Tongji and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, with doctoral programmes in psychiatry.
Its Shanghai Psychological Counselling and Therapy Center on Lingling Road offers counselling and psychotherapy for a wide range of psychological problems and trains therapists from across China.
