Known historically as the “Gongji Hospital”, Shanghai General Hospital was the largest Western hospital in China when it opened in 1864. It recorded many Chinese firsts, including the first liver lobectomy, the first toe-to-thumb transfer and the first operation under acupuncture anaesthesia.
Today it hosts the National Clinical Research Center for Eye Diseases and has eight national key clinical specialty projects, with strong ophthalmology, urology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, haematology and emergency medicine. It works with Cleveland Clinic, Israel’s Rabin Medical Center and the German Cancer Society.
