The hospital was founded by the Shanghai government and the US-based Project HOPE and opened in 1998. In 2010 it became the first children’s hospital in China accredited by JCI, and in 2017 it was named a National Children’s Medical Center.
It is one of China’s top centres for congenital heart disease, paediatric haematology-oncology and developmental-behavioural paediatrics, and runs China’s national childhood leukaemia registry covering 511 hospitals. It ranks No. 5 for paediatrics and in the top 10 for paediatric and cardiac surgery, and has sister partnerships with more than 30 leading hospitals abroad.
