Huadong Hospital was established in 1951 from the Country Hospital built in 1921. It has about 1,300 beds and 1.8 million outpatient visits a year, and specialises in geriatric medicine: it houses the Shanghai Institute of Geriatrics, a WHO Collaborating Centre for community elderly care and the Shanghai key laboratory of clinical geriatrics.
Its special medical centre was the earliest and longest-running provider of medical care to foreigners in Shanghai. Other specialities include imaging, biliary-pancreatic surgery, urology, hernia surgery, digestive endoscopy, oncology, osteoporosis and breast disease.
