The hospital descends from the Paulun Hospital founded by the German doctor Erich Paulun in 1900, later the hospital of National Tongji University; it became a military hospital in 1955 and is open to civilian patients. It has ten national key disciplines.
Its traditional strengths are orthopaedics (especially spine surgery and bone tumours such as chordoma), neurosurgery, nephrology, urology, plastic surgery and emergency medicine, with newer programmes in organ transplantation, orbital tumours, myeloma and lymphoma, sleep disorders and fungal infections.
