Founded in 1958, Xuanwu Hospital was home to China’s first neurosurgical research institute, established in 1960 by Zhao Yicheng, a founder of Chinese neurosurgery, and to the country’s first geriatric research centre (1985). Its Beijing neurology consultation centre is regarded as the “final diagnostic authority” for difficult neurological cases.
Neurology is a national key discipline and the hospital chairs the Chinese Medical Association’s neurology society; functional neurosurgery has been named a clinical centre of excellence internationally. Vascular surgery, led by academician Wang Zhonggao, is also one of the strongest in China.
