Established in 1960 as the first dental department created by new China on its own, the hospital opened in Wuchang in 1962 and took its present name in 2000. Oral basic medicine is a national key discipline, and endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics and periodontics are national key clinical specialties.
It has about 400 dental chairs and 500,000 outpatient visits a year, a network of clinics across Wuhan, and is the birthplace of the Chinese division of the International Association for Dental Research, with partner schools in the US, Europe, Japan and Hong Kong.
