Tongji Hospital was founded in Shanghai in 1900 by the German physician Erich Paulun and moved to Wuhan in 1955. It is home to a national medical centre and the National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric and Gynecologic Diseases, and its rehabilitation department is a WHO collaborating centre. Twelve academicians have trained here, including the surgeon Qiu Fazu, often called the father of modern Chinese surgery.
With 30 national key clinical specialties and three campuses, Tongji is particularly strong in hepatobiliary surgery (led by academician Chen Xiaoping), gynaecological oncology (academician Ma Ding), cardiology, nephrology and transplantation, and its obstetrics and gynaecology ranks No. 2 in China.
