Founded in 1957 by the plastic surgeon Song Ruyao, the hospital was China’s first specialist centre for plastic surgery combining care, teaching and research. It has 440 beds and about 800 staff, and performs nearly 70,000 reconstructive and cosmetic operations a year.
It runs 27 disease-specific centres, including cleft lip and palate, ear reconstruction for microtia, craniofacial surgery, scars, breast, hypospadias, nose reconstruction, hair transplantation and laser treatment. It publishes the Chinese Journal of Plastic Surgery and chairs the Chinese Medical Association’s plastic surgery society.
