Peking University First Hospital opened in 1915 as the clinic of the national Beijing Medical School, making it the first hospital founded by the Chinese state. It created many of the country’s first specialist departments — paediatrics (1929), urology (1946) and nephrology (1950) — and performed some of China’s first kidney transplants (1960), coronary interventions (1986) and minimally invasive lung transplants (2005).
The hospital has about 1,800 beds, 19 national key clinical specialties and roughly 10,000 outpatients a day. Its urology department, led for decades by academician Guo Yinglu, is among the best known in China, and its nephrology, paediatrics and obstetrics programmes rank nationally.
