Founded in 1976 as the Beijing Institute for Cancer Research and hospital, it is jointly run by Peking University and the Beijing hospital authority. It has about 780 beds, 660,000 outpatient visits a year, national key clinical specialties in oncology and pathology, and is home to the Beijing centres for stomach-cancer and breast-cancer prevention and treatment.
