Jinling Hospital descends from the National Central Hospital of 1929–1930, the first national Western hospital founded by Chinese, funded in part by the businessman Aw Boon Haw. It is a military general hospital, also the clinical school of Nanjing University Medical School, and is open to civilian patients.
Its National Clinical Research Center for Kidney Diseases and kidney biopsy centre, built up by academician Li Leishi, are among the most influential in the world for glomerular disease, lupus nephritis and blood purification. The hospital also ranks No. 6 in China for radiology and is known for general surgery and critical care.
