Founded in 1915 as the Beijing Railway General Hospital, Shijitan has about 1,100 beds and is the Capital Medical University School of Oncology. Its cancer centre is one of the oldest and most complete in China; its peritoneal cancer centre pioneered standardised cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in China.
Its lymphatic surgery department was the first in China devoted to lymphatic disease and is internationally leading in lymphoedema and chylous reflux. Its allergy department is a national key clinical specialty and ranks No. 3 in China, known for pollen and food allergy.
