Liver transplantation

Liver transplantation can cure selected patients with liver cancer or end-stage liver disease. Zhongshan Hospital’s team proposed the Shanghai–Fudan criteria for transplantation in liver cancer.

When it is considered

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma within accepted criteria, when the liver is too damaged for safe resection.
  • End-stage liver disease, acute liver failure and some metabolic or congenital liver diseases.

Selection criteria

Transplant teams use criteria based on tumor number, size, vascular invasion and tumor markers to predict good long-term results. The Shanghai–Fudan criteria, proposed by Fan Jia’s team at Zhongshan Hospital, extended selection beyond the classic Milan criteria for some patients.

What leading Chinese hospitals offer

Zhongshan Hospital and West China Hospital run major liver surgery and transplantation programs, with multidisciplinary assessment of every candidate, and offer the full range of non-transplant treatments for patients who are not eligible.

Deceased-donor organs in China are allocated through a national computerized system, and access for foreign patients is very limited. In some cases living-donor transplantation from a close family member may be considered. Our coordinators can check what is possible for your situation.

What are the alternatives to transplantation for liver cancer?

Depending on the tumor and liver function: resection, ablation, interventional therapies such as TACE or HAIC, radiotherapy, and targeted or immune drug treatment.
