Cataract surgery

Cataract surgery replaces the clouded natural lens with a clear artificial lens. It is quick, usually done as a day procedure, and Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center ranks first in China for ophthalmology.

How it works

Through an incision of about 2–3 mm, the surgeon breaks up the cloudy lens with ultrasound (phacoemulsification), removes it and implants a foldable intraocular lens. The operation usually takes less than half an hour under local anesthesia.

Lens options

  • Monofocal lenses for clear distance vision.
  • Toric lenses for astigmatism.
  • Multifocal and extended-depth-of-focus lenses for a wider range of vision.

What Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center offers

High surgical volumes, femtosecond laser-assisted surgery, a dedicated service for complex and childhood cataracts, and a team led by Liu Yizhi that introduced cataract techniques used internationally.

Frequently asked questions

Will I still need glasses?

With a standard monofocal lens, most people need reading glasses. Toric lenses correct astigmatism, and multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus lenses can reduce dependence on glasses; your surgeon will discuss the trade-offs.

When can I fly after cataract surgery?

Many patients can fly a day or two after an uncomplicated operation, once the first check is done. Follow your surgeon’s advice on eye drops and protection.
