Also known as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, the hospital grew from the Ophthalmic Hospital opened in 1835 and is where Sun Yat-sen studied medicine. It recorded many firsts in Chinese medicine: the first eye operations, ovariectomy, bladder-stone removal and ether anaesthesia in China, the first X-ray and the first Chinese medical journal.
Today it has more than 3,200 beds, 4.5 million outpatient visits a year and nine national key clinical specialties, including oncology, endocrinology, urology, general surgery, orthopaedics and gynaecology. Its researchers lead internationally in tumour microenvironment and RNA medicine.
