Founded in 1954, the hospital has about 6,000 beds, 200,000 discharges and 130,000 operations a year. It hosts the Heilongjiang Organ Transplant Centre and has transplanted hearts, lungs, livers, kidneys, spleens, pancreas-kidney and heart-lung combinations and even combined thyroid-parathyroid-thymus grafts; in 2006 it became one of two hospitals in China able to perform total aortic replacement.
Its cardiology department ranks No. 8 in China, supported by a Ministry of Education key laboratory for myocardial ischaemia. A former nursing director received the Florence Nightingale Medal in 2001.
