The centre was formed in 2006 by merging Guangzhou Children’s Hospital and Guangzhou Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and is now affiliated with Guangzhou Medical University. It has campuses in Yuexiu, Zhujiang New Town and Zengcheng and nearly 4 million outpatient visits a year.
Its Guangdong neonatal critical-care network was the first in China, transporting about 1,000 critically ill newborns a year without a death in transit — known as a “mobile ICU”. Its premature-baby unit has saved babies born at 25 weeks and 650 g.
