Founded in 1928 as the hospital of the National Henan University medical school, the hospital moved to Zhengzhou in 1958 and took its present name in 2000. With more than 14,000 staff and several campuses, including the Henan Provincial Eye and Stomatological hospitals, it is one of the busiest hospitals anywhere; in late 2025 it consolidated its campuses and reduced its bed count to about 7,500.
It has 20 national key clinical specialties and is known for heart, brain, lung, liver and kidney care, ENT and reproductive medicine (No. 2 in China). It reported several Chinese firsts, including identical-twin living-donor liver transplant and autologous lung transplantation under bypass.
