The hospital opened in 1883 and was among the first hospitals rated Grade 3A by the Ministry of Health; it is the medical guidance centre for southern Jiangsu. It has national key disciplines in haematology and orthopaedics and eight national key clinical specialties, a state key laboratory of clinical immunology and the Ministry of Health key laboratory of thrombosis and haemostasis.
Its haematology department, built up by academician Ruan Changgeng, is one of China’s leading centres for bone-marrow and stem-cell transplantation, including unrelated-donor transplants; the Jiangsu branch of the China Marrow Donor Program HLA typing laboratory is based here.
