In 2023 Li Qingfeng’s team reported in Cell Reports Medicine a “spatially induced regeneration” approach that rebuilds tissue such as finger joints and ear cartilage using the body’s own regenerative capacity, without external cells, scaffolds or growth factors; it was used to reconstruct the outer ear in five patients with unilateral microtia.
Li Qingfeng has served as a vice president of the hospital and was named a Changjiang Scholar distinguished professor by China’s Ministry of Education in 2009. The department was founded in 1961 by Zhang Disheng, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
